Board Game (A.K.A. First Blog)

2 weeks ago we were split into teams and set the task of designing a board game aimed at any audience and with whatever theme we wanted. Initially I thought this would be easy but it has proven to be very difficult.

We assigned ourselves different roles within the team and I, personally took on the role of concept designer along with fellow teammate Joey.

The game we came up with is an abstract game which is similar to chess or checkers. There can be either 2 or 4 players. We have a board with a 9x9 grid and each player has five pieces. The pieces are tetrahedral to allow for values around each edge which can be turned to change the values as and when the player desires. The object of the game, at its core, is to take out your opponent(s).

Initially, we were going to make the board with elongated points on each side to hold the pieces which could be folded up to form a pyramid, thus reinforcing the pyramid theme already in place due to the game pieces, and also making it eco-friendly as the pieces could be kept inside and saving on packaging. With this in mind I worked on an Ancient Egyptian theme for the game (I will be uploading scans of concept art soon). However, it was decided that this, together with our running title; Giza restricted us too much because we had originally hoped to create a game that would be flexible with both themes and target audience and one of our original theme ideas had been military which would not have worked with either the pyramid shaped box or the name. Also, it was found that, with the points coming off the sides and the pieces starting in the corners of the main board, the overall effect was rather jarring so we have had to rethink the board layout.

I am currently working on various themes for our game including military, fantasy and elements.
